Hoi An, Vietnam — Authorities in Quang Nam province, central Vietnam, are investigating the unexplained deaths of a British woman and a South African man found at a villa in the popular tourist destination of Hoi An.
The bodies of the two individuals, both in their thirties, were discovered on December 26, sending shockwaves through the local and international communities.
According to reports from VietNamNet, a news outlet associated with Vietnam’s Ministry of Information and Communications, the victims were identified as O.A.E., a 34-year-old British woman, and E.O.N., a 36-year-old South African man.
The woman was found in Room 101, while the man was discovered in Room 201 of the villa. Staffers reportedly made the grim discovery in the early morning hours of December 26.
Investigators have stated that there were no signs of physical trauma or external injuries on either of the victims. However, several empty alcohol bottles were found at the scene, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The couple had reportedly been staying at the villa since July, but their sudden passing has left both authorities and loved ones searching for answers.
The UK Foreign Office has expressed its support for the British woman’s family, confirming they are in contact with local authorities in Vietnam.
A spokesperson told CNN, “We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Vietnam and are in contact with the local authorities.” Meanwhile, CNN has reached out to the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation for additional comment.
The investigation is ongoing, with local police in Hoi An working closely with international agencies to piece together the details of the deaths. As authorities continue their inquiry, the tragic incident has left many questions unanswered about the events leading to the couple’s untimely demise.
