Universal Pictures has announced that the hit film Wicked will be available for digital purchase or rental starting December 31 on platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV.
Fans can look forward to an array of bonus features, including a sing-along version, behind-the-scenes content, commentary from director Jon M. Chu, and stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, as well as several deleted and extended scenes.
Among the highlights is a 40-minute featurette showcasing the transformative magic behind the film’s special effects and large-scale sets. These extras aim to provide an in-depth look at the creative process that brought the magical land of Oz to life.
Wicked features an impressive cast, including Erivo, Grande, Jeff Goldblum, Bowen Yang, Peter Dinklage, Marissa Bode, Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey, and Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh.
The nearly three-hour-long movie is the first of Chu’s two-part adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical, which itself was inspired by Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch.
The film, which recounts the backstory of Oz before Dorothy’s arrival, premiered in theaters on November 22. Since its release, it has earned over $580 million globally, achieving the third highest-grossing opening weekend of 2024, trailing only Deadpool & Wolverine and Inside Out 2.
Wicked has also garnered critical acclaim, earning four Golden Globe nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Both Erivo and Grande received acting nods for their performances in lead and supporting roles, respectively.
Fans can also look forward to the sequel, Wicked: For Good, named after one of the musical’s iconic songs. The second installment is set to premiere in theaters on November 21, 2025, continuing the enchanting story of Oz.
